1168 viewsA previously unpublished picture from a fighter pilot's scrapbook of members of the RAF's 610 Squadron on summer visit to Arrochar from their base in Cheshire in 1938. In the background is a steamer at the now demolished Arrochar Pier, and the summit of the Cobbler mountain. The following year war broke out and two years later these men were fighting in the Battle of Britain and Helensburgh had its own RAF station. Image supplied by Robin Bird.

Patients choir1134 viewsDuring World War One from 1914-18 the Helensburgh Town Council-owned Hermitage House in Hermitage Park became a military hospital with a capacity for 58 patients who were sent from Stobhall Hospital in Glasgow. The wounded men in their blue uniforms were a familiar sight in the town, being wheeled around the park by their nurses. A number of local ladies and girls helped out in the hospital and the local Red Cross detachment also assisted the trained nurses. Many local girls met their future husbands among the wounded ‘tommies’, and patients were taken on outings in a horse-drawn carriage from Waldie & Co. in Sinclair Street.

HMS Traveller1109 viewsThe Royal Navy T class submarine Traveller in the Gareloch in April 1942. Built by Scotts of Greenock and launched in August 1941, Traveller spent most of her career in the Mediterranean. She was unsuccessful in most of her attacks, sinking the Italian merchantman Albachiara, but launching failed attacks against the Italian merchant ship Ezilda Croce, the Italian 'small light cruiser', the Italian tanker Proserpina and the Italian torpedo boats Castore and Ciclone. Traveller left Malta on November 28 1942 for a patrol in the Gulf of Taranto. She carried out a reconnaissance of Taranto harbour for a Chariot human torpedo attack, but never returned and is presumed to have hit a mine.

Cardross Roll of Honour1098 viewsThis memorial to the village fallen of World War One was unveiled by David Murray of Moorepark and dedicated by the Rev William Maxwell in the old Cardross Parish Church on September 26 1920. Some 200 young men went from the Parish to take part in the military operations, and of these 31 lost their lives.

Navy prepares1092 viewsA rare World War Two photograph taken from Portkil, Kilcreggan, looking at a battleship and several cruisers in the Clyde between Portkil and Greenock. Donated to the Heritage Trust by Michael Wilson, the image is thought to be of vessels assembling for the North Africa landings in 1943.
