Susie's Castle1223 viewsBorn in 1847, Susie Reid was a well-known character, not only at Portincaple, where she lived for many years until her death at 81, but also much further afield. Susie's personality would probably have been enough to make her a local celebrity, but the extra factor that ensured her a place in the hall of fame lay in the fact that her home was an upturned fishing smack. Susie's Castle1101 viewsSusie lived for 60 years in the upturned fishing smack, her 'castle' on the Loch Long shore at Portincaple, and postcards of her home were sold. In this image she is standing at the door knitting and puffing her clay pipe. Her husband Jamie made a living from fishing, and the creel or basket in the foreground would be used for carrying fish. If he had a good catch, he would barrel it up to Whistlefield Station and take the train to Glasgow for the fish market. Image circa 1912.

John emigrated to South Africa and his family are still there; Robert Douglas was in the oil industry, died in Burma, his only daughter Fiona is in Kirriemuir; James also a keen photographer was a bank manager in Fort William for many years; my father Alexander was an engineer, spent the war in the torpedo factory on Loch Long then worked for Rolls Royce before going to Workington as a machine shop manager; Mabel, the sister, died shortly after her parents in 1946. Rhu wedding1034 viewsAlice McDougall kindly supplied this picture of the wedding of her parents, Mr and Mrs Alexander Rankin Gold, in Rhu on July 16 1936. They were married from Armadale House in Rhu where her mother, Flora MacKinnon, worked for Colonel Kenneth Barge as a cook and where this picture was taken. Alice says: "Lydia Barge is the older girl seated in front of my father. My grandparents from Brechin are beside my father. My grandfather from Skye ibeside my mother. Beside him is Auntie Lottie an her husband John Cree who lived in Craigendoran, and their daughter is the other little girl. She had a shop at the east end of Helensburgh at one time I believe. Behind John Cree is Colonel Barge and behind his right shoulder is, I believe Nigel Barge."
