Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

The Great Britain VII885 views'The Great Britain VII' toured around Britain for several days, mainly hauled by steam engines, in 2014. Day 4 of its travels was April 29 when it travelled from Grange-over-Sands to Edinburgh. The following day saw it going from Edinburgh to Stranraer and back. On Day 6 it split in two, and train A travelled from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Inverness. Train B left from Edinburgh for the West Highland Line and Fort William, and the photo was taken by Stewart Noble on Saturday May 3 (Day 8) when train B, returning from Fort William to Edinburgh, approached Helensburgh Upper Station. The next day it went from Edinburgh to York. No.62005 is a K-1 class locomotive built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in 1949.

Merry Christmas731 viewsThis Christmas card was sent to Helensburgh TV inventor John Logie Baird's widow Margaret in 1948. It is signed by J.D.Percy, who worked for Baird Television in the 1930s and lived on until about 1985, and depicts the first demonstration of colour television in London in July 1928. Image by courtesy of the inventor's son Professor Malcolm Baird, who is president of Helensburgh Heritage Trust.

Spy_s-Coalyard~0.jpg
Spy's Coalyard1217 viewsA. & R.Spy, coal merchants and colliery agents, had a coalyard at 23-25 Sinclair Street — in the middle of the block between Clyde and Princes Streets — until 1964 when the business was sold to D. & G.Allan Ltd. of Glasgow. It was then acquired by William Low Ltd. who built the town's first supermarket on the site and opened it in 1966. The firm also had premises at 110 West Princes Street and a wholesale depot at Helensburgh Central Station. In the picture, supplied by Pat Drayton, are Robin and Jack Spy.

Mystery Rhu group2687 viewsThis image supplied by Alistair Quinlan show a Rhu group, possibly a church outing, circa 1910. Back row third right is his grandfather, William Lyon Winton, and sprawling on the grass front left is his brother, Arthur Burnett Winton. Their brother, Sidney Walker Winton, who was between them in age is probably wearing the white shirt, to the right of the cornet (5th right front). Any more information would be welcome.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1176 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
