Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Robert Bain memorial647 viewsThe large iron memorial in Rhu Churchyard erected by Comet steamship pioneer Henry Bell to Robert Bain, the skipper most famously associated with the Comet, following his death in 1829 at the age of 39. He spent 16 years of his life working for Bell, Helensburgh's first Provost, and also served as deputy town clerk. He took over command of the Comet in 1812. Rosneath shore465 viewsAn etching of Rosneath shore and the Gareloch by Greenock-based artist Peter Kerr. The McLean Museum in Greenock has many of his paintings. Most of his landscapes were of the Clyde shores, and Cove and Kilcreggan. He was married to Catherine McMillan, born in Helensburgh in 1863, whose family owned the Teak and Ash. Larchfield School1856 viewsA 1951 image of the staff and pupils of Helensburgh's Larchfield School outside the Colquhoun Street building. It later became part of Lomond School, but when that was consolidated on the St Bride's site it was sold to Cala Homes for development. The headmaster at the time was Stephen Hutchinson, later to become a minister, and other masters included Mr Barclay-Smith, Mr Goldsmith, Mr Denny and Mr Geddes. Heading for camp898 viewsTerritorials of 162 Battery 54th Light Anti-Aircraft, Royal Artillery, from Helensburgh leave Helensburgh Central Station in September 1939 on route to England for training. They marched from the Drill Hall in Lomond Street to the station led by a piper. Among those in the picture are D.Kennedy, Gordon Hattle, Wug Robertson, G.Bailey, G.Nicholson, Tom Rennie, Angus McKell, Tom Rennie, Lachie McDonald, John Joseph Donnachie and Ian Lawrie. They were in France till June 21 1940, having served in Rheims protecting airfields and retreating to Marseilles where they embarked on a collier, possibly the last British ship to leave. Provost's Lamps1205 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
