Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Redgauntlet~0.jpg
Steamer then minesweeper714 viewsThe Clyde steel paddle steamer Redgauntlet, built in 1895 for the North British Steam Packet Co. at Craigendoran and launched on April 4, is pictured at the Isle of May. She was built by Barclay, Curle & Co. Ltd., Glasgow, at their Clydeholm Yard, and in May 1909 passed to the Galloway Saloon Steam Packet Co. for its Firth of Forth service. On May 4 1916 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty for use as a minesweeper and was based in Grimsby and commissioned as HMS Redgauntlet II. The following year she was bought by the Royal Navy, and two years later sold to French owners and registered in Algeria. It is believed that she was scrapped in 1934.

Gairloch-Head.jpg
Gairloch Head825 viewsA print of Garelochhead probably from a book written by John M.Leighton around 1840, entitled "Strath Clutha or Beauties of the Clyde". The name J.Fleming is in the bottom left corner and the name Joseph Swan in the bottom right corner. John Fleming was a Greenock artist who lived from 1792-1845. Joseph Swan was a Glasgow engraver and, it would appear, something of an entrepreneur. Image supplied by Stewart Noble.

Second clubhouse1072 viewsHelensburgh Golf Club's 'Tin Hut' clubhouse in its second position. The original clubhouse was built in 1894 just to the west of the Old Luss Road, but it was upgraded and moved in 1900 close to the West Highland Railway Line at East Abercromby Street. In 1909 it was acquired by Vale of Leven Golf Club and in that year the present clubhouse was opened.

Camis Eskan greenhouse962 viewsThe large greenhouse at Camis Eskan, on the east side of Helensburgh. The man is possibly Jimmy Orr and the picture may have been taken by his son-in-law George Truman, who was chauffeur to the Dennistouns who owned the mansion when he married Agnes (Cissie) Orr in 1924. Image, circa 1930, supplied by Alistair Quinlan — Agnes was his great aunt.

Row Parish Church761 viewsA 1904 image of Rhu — then Row — Parish Church. It dates from 1851 and stands on the site of an 18th century predecessor. Amongst those buried in the kirkyard is Henry Bell, whose Comet was the world's first commercially successful steamship. In 1851 the marine engineer Robert Napier built the statue which today marks Bell's grave.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1180 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
