Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Craigendoran Station pier platform1625 viewsThe platform at Craigendoran Station which brought trippers direct to the steamers at the pier, and one steamer can be seen. Both the station and the piers were built in 1882 after a plan to extend the Helensburgh line through the town centre to Helensburgh pier fell through because of local opposition. Image date unknown.

150th anniversary booklet1137 viewsThis illustrated booklet was published by the Comet Trust, based at Lithgows Ltd. in Port Glasgow, to mark the 150th anniversary and was printed by James Paton Ltd. of Paisley, price one shilling. It was sold in aid of the Comet Trust Fund, established to provide travelling scholarships for shipbuilding apprentices. It told the story of Henry Bell, and also of the building of the 1962 Comet replica.

Queen's Hotel908 viewsThe Queen's Hotel was originally Baths House, built by Henry Bell, who built Europe's first commercial steamship the Comet in 1812 and was the first Provost of Helensburgh. The building has had many alterations but still stands on East Clyde Street, having been converted into flats. Image date unknown.

West End United 19651671 viewsHelensburgh's West End United football team which took part in the Gareloch League, which also included teams from the Faslane base, Arrochar, Garelochhead, Rosneath and Kilcreggan. The club was run by secretary Jimmy Shields for ten years, and after his death the team folded. Wishing Well1237 viewsThe Hermitage Park wishing well. Legend has it that a hermit lived in and gave his name to Hermitage Park. This wishing well was known as the Hermit's Well, and it was said that he granted a wish to those who drank from the copper ladle inside. It exists to this day, but is in a very poor state. Cardross Old Parish Church723 viewsThe church, the second on the site, was built in 1826 to designs by Greenock architect George Dempster. It was destroyed by incendiary bombs dropped by German bombers over the night of May 5-6 1941. The tower and walls were made safe in 1954 as a memorial, with the interior raised as a lawn, and the tower was restored in 1999. The graveyard contains monuments from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This image taken from the rear was supplied by Donald Fullarton.

Provost's Lamps1190 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
