Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Puffer-VIC-32-at-Narrows-w.jpg
Puffer VIC 32770 viewsThe puffer VIC 32 passes Rosneath's historic Ferry Inn while steaming through Rhu Narrows on May 3 2017. VIC 32 was built by Dunston’s of Thorne, Yorkshire, at Rowhedge in November 1943. This was a busy time for the Clyde shipbuilding yards and the Admiralty needed 50 — later 100 — victualling boats in a hurry. So they were built in groups of three by various different yards in England. In 1989 the “Friends of VIC 32” group was started, a money raising venture in case of an engineering or other crisis, and there are now hundreds of Friends. The vessel is operated by Puffer Steamboat Holidays Ltd. and offers five day cruises in the West Highlands each summer. Photo by Stewart Noble.

Tarbet Hotel998 viewsErected about 1810, the Tarbet Hotel on Loch Lomondside was built in true Scottish baronial style with fine features both inside and out, and has been a mecca for visitors ever since. Image date unknown.

Shandon Bus Crash1354 viewsA Garelochhead Coach Service double decker bus lies on the beach at Shandon after an accident on the old lochside road in November 1965. Andrew Shirley from Rhu, who is researching the Garelochhead bus companies, believes this bus is MXX 177, one of the former London Transport RT class operated by the firm. It was repaired and put back into service.

Builder and model656 viewsA stalwart of Helensburgh and District Modellers Club, Spike Jones, is pictured with the model of the 1962 Comet replica he helped to build. He and other members sailed the model beside the pier during the bicentenary celebrations in Helensburgh on Saturday August 4 2012, and subsequently donated the model to Helensburgh Heritage Trust for display in the Heritage Centre in Helensburgh Library in West King Street. Mothballed warships1976 viewsGarelochhead and the Gareloch from Whistlefield Brae, showing mothballed Royal Navy warships lying at anchor in the loch — a ship of the King George V battleship class in the foreground and two others of the class in the background. The first of these ships was laid up there after decommissioning in November 1949, followed by King George V (June 1950) and Duke of York (November 1951). Approval for scrapping these ships was given in April 1957, so the image date is likely to be between 1951 and 1957.

A grocery shop manager, he moved to Helensburgh before 1900, and lived at 24 East Princes Street on March 2 1900 when he married Christina Graham, of 29 James Street. His age at the time of his marriage was given as 27, and he lived in Helensburgh until his death in 1945.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1180 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
