Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Jack Buchanan894 viewsAn autographed photo of Helensburgh-born Jack Buchanan, the international entertainer and Hollywood film star. Born on April 2 1891, he grew up in the town and was a great friend of TV inventor John Logie Baird. He died on October 20 1957 at the age of 66.

Prince William-4888 viewsHRH Prince William of Wales visited HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane on October 19 2007 in his honorary Royal Navy capacity as Commodore-in-Chief Scotland and Submarines. He is pictured arriving at the base in one of the Royal Marines new high-speed offshore raiding craft, which he boarded at the Clyde Offsite Centre in Rhu and which he took control of for a time. Prince William is currently a serving Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry, also known as the Blues and Royals.

Knockderry Castle2442 viewsA view of Knockderry Castle at Cove, published by MacFarlane Brothers of Cove, circa 1908. Built on the site of a Danish fort about 1855 to the design of the famous architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, Knockderry Castle became the family home of the Templeton carpet manufacturing family. In 1896-7 another famous architect, William Leiper, designed an extension and a lodge for John Templeton, and a famous guest of his at the castle was millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. For some years a hotel, it is now a private residence again.

They had just made the trip across the Firth to Helensburgh pier on board the Comet replica. This cutting from the Helensburgh and Gareloch Times was supplied by Bruce Benson.

Helensburgh Swimming Pool943 viewsA 1959 image showing the entrance and the north west corner of the outdoor pool, built in 1928 as a gift from Provost Andrew Buchanan, beside Helensburgh Pier. It was replaced in 1976 by an indoor pool on an adjacent site, and a year later the outdoor pool was closed. It was demolished in 1996 and replaced by a childrens play area. Behind it is an archway which led to the pier, but was demolished some years ago.

Provost's Lamps1189 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
