Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Helensburgh Golf Club350 viewsA view of the clubhouse, circa 1944. The club was founded in 1893, with a nine hole course designed by former Open champion 'Old' Tom Morris. This second clubhouse was opened in 1900, and five years later the course was upgraded to 18 holes.

Prince William-2843 viewsHRH Prince William of Wales visited HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane on October 19 2007 in his honorary Royal Navy capacity as Commodore-in-Chief Scotland and Submarines. He also visited the comprehensively upgraded Drumfork Club in Churchill, Helensburgh, and found plenty of time to greet and talk to the families who had gathered at Churchill Square to wish him well. Prince William is currently a serving Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry, also known as the Blues and Royals.

Olympic Medalist Bobby MacGregor1662 viewsHelensburgh-born Scottish and British champion and world record holder Bobby MacGregor gave a demonstration swim at the Helensburgh Swimming Club Gala in the outdoor pool in August 1964. Son of a former burgh pondmaster, he went on to take silver in the 100 metres freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics a few weeks later.
Now an architect, Bobby moved to Helensburgh some years ago.

The Sugar Ship1377 viewsAn aerial view of the 8,325 ton Greek cargo ship Captayannis lying on a sandbank near to Ardmore Point not long after she was sunk. On the evening of January 27 1974 the area suffered from a terrific storm which blew the vessel from its anchor and caused it to collide with the BP tanker British Light. The anchor chains of the tanker holed the sugar boat allowing water to pour into her, so she was beached in the shallow waters over the sandbank.

Provost's Lamps1194 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
