Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Selling Baird undersocks696 viewsOne of John Logie Baird's inventions was the Baird undersock, described as a specially medicated soft absorbent sheath worn next to the skin under the sock to absorb and neutralise perspiration, keeping feet clean and healthy. Said to be ideal for the soldier, and with tributes from men in the World War One trenches, they cost eight shillings for half a dozen pairs. Image date not known.

Victoria Hall811 viewsThe Victoria Hall in Sinclair Street, Helensburgh, with its original metal railings in front which were removed during World War Two to help the war effort. They were replaced to mark the burgh's bicentenary in 2002 after an initiative by the Friends of the Victoria Hall. The building itself was funded by public subscription in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and was altered and added to by A.N.Paterson in 1899.

Rob Roy's Cave754 viewsThe entrance to Rob Roy's Cave on Loch Lomond, circa 1915. It is sited on the east bank near Inversnaid and was not so much a cave as a shelter provided by the fallen rocks. It is thought to have provided shelter for both Rob Roy and Robert the Bruce — the latter is said to have been saved from his pursuers when sleeping wild goats in front of the cave misled his enemies into believing it was empty. Rob Roy was for a time Laird of Craigrostan and Inversnaid.

It is from the book 'Sketches of Churches and Clergy, published by Macneur and Bryden Ltd. of Helensburgh in 1889. Originally known as the West Parish Church, St Bride's Church was opened on March 10 1878. Its first minister was the Rev John Baird, father of TV inventor John Logie Baird. In 1981 it was united with the then Old and St Andrew's Church in Colquhoun Square to become the West Kirk, and a few years later it was demolished and replaced by a new burgh library and flats.

Provost's Lamps1180 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
