THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Knockderry Castle1339 viewsA 1902 image of Knockderry Castle, high above the Cove shore. Built on the site of a Danish fort about 1855 to the design of the famous architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, the Castle became the family home of the Templeton carpet manufacturing family. In 1896-7 another famous architect, William Leiper, designed an extension and a lodge for John Templeton, and a famous guest of his at the castle was millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. For some years a hotel, it is now a private residence again.

House at Rhu717 viewsSir James Guthrie (1859-1930), who lived much of his life at Rhu and Helensburgh and was the leader of the now famous Glasgow Boys, painted this picture entitled 'My house at Rhu'. His home for many years in the village was the family home of his wife, Helen Newton Whitelaw, who lived at her family home, a Rhu mansion called Rowmore, which has stunning grounds and views over the Gareloch. Despite the title, this appears to show only the entrance. Oil on canvas, 56 x 41 cms, it is in the collection of Fife Council and is at Kirkcaldy Art Gallery and Museum.

Craigs Pool835 viewsA view of the most popular summer picnic area in Glen Fruin, Craigs Pool.No apostrophe required, because it is not the pool belonging to, or associated with, anyone called Craig. As with Craigendoran (meaning ‘rock of the otter’) the craigs referred to are the big flagstones on the bottom of the pool. Craig is Gaelic for stone or rock and it is where the word crag or craggy comes from. Image, circa 2006, supplied by Gordon Fraser.

Provost's Lamps1180 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
