Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Portincaple House1785 viewsPortincaple House on Loch Longside was also known as Ferry House, and the ferry plied across the loch to Mark. An open-air church service was held annually on the front lawn on Glasgow Fair Sunday. It was the home of ferryman and fisherman Finlay McNab and his family, and also the holiday home of the controversial Nottingham MP Charles Bradlaugh. Image circa 1902.

Original St Bride's School1062 viewsSt Bride's School at 10 Stafford Street, Helensburgh, a branch of the Girls School Company, was founded in 1895 to provide such an education for girls as would prepare them for the interests and responsibilities of social life, and enable those who desired it to proceed to the wider education of the Universities. Miss Renton was the headmistress at the time of this photograph, probably around 1910. In 1977 it merged with Larchfield School for boys to become Lomond School. The St Bride's building was largely destroyed in an overnight fire in 1997, but was rebuilt to house the senior and top primary pupils.

Deborah and Ginger1119 viewsHelensburgh film star Deborah Kerr, on her first visit to Hollywood to make the 1947 film 'The Hucksters' with Clark Gable, met Ginger Rogers — a great admirer of her acting skill — one day when she visited the set to say hello. According to Metro-Goldwin-Mayer, Deborah insisted on having tea on the set every afternoon at four. Usually she entertained a visitor or invited members of the cast and crew to join her in her dressing room.

Provost's Lamps1194 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
