Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Shandon Hydro Conservatory1043 viewsThe Conservatory at Shandon Hydropathic Hotel. Originally West Shandon, this magnificent building was the home of Robert Napier, the greatest figure in Clyde shipbuilding and marine engineering in the mid-19th century. During World War One the Hydro became a hospital, and in World War Two it was used by the army. In 1951 it became a hotel again, but in 1957 it was closed and demolished. Ferry Inn, Rosneath848 viewsAn art print of the Ferry Inn at Rosneath by Mary Young Hunter, dated 1906, which was found at an auction in Staffordshire. She and her husband J.Young Hunter painted 67 views for a book entitled 'The Clyde: River and Firth', written by Helensburgh journalist and author Neil Munro and published in 1907 by Adam and Charles Black of Soho Square West, London.

Loch Long Torpedo Range1154 viewsThis picture, circa 1950, shows the Loch Long Torpedo Range which was in use from 1912-86. The building was badly damaged by fire and demolished in 2007. Activity at the range reached a peak during World War Two, with more than 12,000 torpedoes being fired down the loch in 1944.

Granary bus crash717 viewsA Garelochhead Coach Services bus crashed into the Granary Restaurant on West Clyde Street after careering down Sinclair Street when the brakes failed. The driver of a Saturday bus from Luss elected to hit the building rather than land on the shore, and was widely praised for his skill in avoiding pedestrians. No-one was seriously injured. RAF squadron visit943 viewsA previously unpublished picture from a fighter pilot's scrapbook of members of the RAF's 610 Squadron on summer visit to Helensburgh from their base in Cheshire in 1938. They have donned tartan berets, much to the amusement of local children. The following year war broke out and two years later these men were fighting in the Battle of Britain and Helensburgh had its own RAF station. Image supplied by Robin Bird.

Navy prepares966 viewsA rare World War Two photograph taken from Portkil, Kilcreggan, looking at a battleship and several cruisers in the Clyde between Portkil and Greenock. Donated to the Heritage Trust by Michael Wilson, the image is thought to be of vessels assembling for the North Africa landings in 1943.

St Bride's School2068 viewsSt Bride's School for girls at 10 Stafford Street, which was founded in 1895. In 1977 it merged with Larchfield School for boys to become Lomond School. The St Bride's building was largely destroyed in an overnight fire in 1997, but was rebuilt to house the senior and top primary pupils. Image circa 1934.

Provost's Lamps1194 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
