THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Swedish toast686 viewsHelensburgh was not the only place where the bicentenary of Henry Bell’s Comet was remembered on Saturday August 4 2012 — a toast was proposed in Sweden. As he had done 50 years earlier, retired naval architect Gerhard Schack, an octogenarian, raised a glass in tribute to the man who pioneered commercial steamships. This is a picture of the Comet model he made himself.

Rosneath Castle2093 viewsThe castle and grounds from the air. Completed in 1806 by London-based architect Joseph Bonomi, this neo-classical mansion replaced a castle burnt down in 1802. It was used as a military hospital during the First World War and was home to Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, until her death in 1939. It was an HQ for the Rosneath Naval Base in World War Two, then abandoned, then damaged by fire in 1947, and demolished in 1961. Image circa 1939.

Water trip753 viewsHelensburgh town councillors and officials at the opening of the Sinclair Street water pump house on June 10 1926. This was part of the annual inspection of the waterworks, and the company then went on to Glen Fruin but "on arrival here a heavy fall of rain made it undesirable to visit the source of supply, and the usual game of pitch and toss having been played and refreshments partaken of, the journey continued to Aberfoyle. Once there luncheon was served in the Bailie Nicol Jarvie Hotel". Image donated to the Heritage Trust by John Stirling whose father James N.Stirling is in centre of the back row. His father was the burgh surveyor and water engineer, taking up the post in 1912 and continuing until 1946.

Provost's Lamps1176 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
