Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Craigendoran Pier1092 viewsThis drawing by well known Helensburgh artist and art historian Ailsa Tanner captures the curve of the steamer platform at Craigendoran Station. This is one of the works of art in the Anderson Trust Collection, which puts on an exhibition each Spring in Helensburgh Library in West King Street.

Waverley at Craigendoran866 viewsThe steamer Waverley at Craigendoran pier in 1968, with part of the Caledonia in view. Built by A. & J.Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow in 1946, the 693-ton Waverley entered service in 1947 and is the world's last sea-going paddler. She replaced the first Waverley, built in 1899 and sunk at Dunkirk in 1940, and cruised the Clyde until 1973 for Caledonian-MacBrayne. In 1974 she was sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and re-entered service in 1975. She calls regularly at Helensburgh in summer.

He moved to Helensburgh before 1900, and was resident at 24 East Princes Street on March 2 1900 when he married Christina Graham, of 29 James Street. His age at the time of his marriage was given as 27, and he lived in Helensburgh until his death in 1945.

He is pictured arriving at the base in one of the Royal Marines new high-speed offshore raiding craft, which he boarded at the Clyde Offsite Centre in Rhu and which he took control of for a time. Prince William is currently a serving Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry, also known as the Blues and Royals.

Provost's Lamps1176 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
