Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

1962 celebrations747 viewsA coach carrying local dignitaries in costume, including Provost J.McLeod Williamson, arrives at the Queen's Hotel, which as the Baths Hotel had been opened and operated by Henry Bell and his wife. They had just made the trip across the Firth to Helensburgh pier on board the Comet replica. This cutting from the Helensburgh and Gareloch Times was supplied by Bruce Benson.

Shandon Hydro928 viewsThe Shandon Hydropathic Hotel. Originally West Shandon, this magnificent building was the home of Robert Napier, the greatest figure in Clyde shipbuilding and marine engineering in the mid-19th century. During World War One the Hydro became a hospital, and in World War Two it was used by the army. In 1951 it became a hotel again, but in 1957 it was closed and demolished. Image date unknown.

St Bride's School2068 viewsSt Bride's School for girls at 10 Stafford Street, which was founded in 1895. In 1977 it merged with Larchfield School for boys to become Lomond School. The St Bride's building was largely destroyed in an overnight fire in 1997, but was rebuilt to house the senior and top primary pupils. Image circa 1934.

R.M.Clyde, Grocers1199 viewsThe R.M.Clyde grocery at 64 and 66 West Princes Street, Helensburgh. The red sandstone building was called Waverley Place, and was designed by Robert Wemyss and built in 1897, opposite the Post Office. Next door to the shop is the tearoom of McAdam the baker.

It took place on June 4 1906 at the junction of Glasgow Street and West Princes Street. The car on the left belonged to Mr F.McAlpine of Helensburgh, and the other to Mr Kirkpatrick of Lagbuie, Shandon.

Provost's Lamps1195 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
