Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Park Church746 viewsPark Church at the junction of East King Street and Charlotte Street, Helensburgh, now the Buddhist Meditation Centre of Scotland. Built in 1862 as the East Free Church, it became Park United Free Church in 1900 following the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church. It became Park Church in 1929 when the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland united as the Church of Scotland. The congregation became part of Helensburgh Parish Church, and in 2016 the church building was bought by Buddhists. Image published by M.C.Robertson, West End Library, Helensburgh, circa 1912.

Iona Colquhoun marries Marquis1291 viewsIona Colquhoun (18), daughter of Luss laird Sir Ivar Colquhoun and his wife and a former pupil of Helensburgh's St Bride's School, married the Marquis of Lorne (26), heir to the Duke of Argyll, at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh in the summer of 1965, and the reception for 500 guests — many of them local — followed at the Assembly Rooms. A surprise guest was Lord Colin Campbell, the Duke's younger son, who arrived unexpectedly from New Zealand. Provost J.McLeod Williamson and Town Clerk Robert Mackay and their wives represented Helensburgh.

Faslane shipbreaking532 viewsThe Shipbreaking Industries yard at Faslane, clearly illustrating that they broke up old railway locomotives as well as ships. After Faslane had been a military port in World War Two, at the end of 1945 the southern section was handed over to the Royal Navy who used it as a base for the Reserve Fleet. In August 1946 the rest was handed over to Metal Industries (later Shipbreaking Industries) for shipbreaking. Many famous vessels ended their days there, including the last four-funnelled liner, the Aquitania, the German battleship Derflinger which had been scuttled at Scapa Flow, and the last battleship built for the Royal Navy, HMS Vanguard. SS Prince George903 viewsThe 256-ton Prince George, pictured at Balloch pier packed with passengers, was in service on Loch Lomond from 1899 to 1938. Built by A. & J.Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow, she was towed up the Leven. Her machinery meant she was rather expensive to operate. Most of her service was on the Balloch to Ardlui route, although she did do some afternoon excursion work. She was withdrawn and laid up at Balloch in 1938. Image date unknown.

Provost's Lamps1193 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
