50 years of Helensburgh rugby

rugby-club-logo-wMEMBERS of Helensburgh Rugby Football Club have begun planning for the club's 50th anniversary from August 23-25 next year.

A Friday evening reception will be followed by a match on the Saturday afternoon, then a Golden Jubilee Gala dinner for some 500 guests in a marquee at the Ardencaple ground in the evening.

It is hoped that former players will return to the town from all over the world to take part in a weekend of nostalgia and reminiscences. Past captains are being asked to take tables for their former players and partners.

A club history is being written, there will be a souvenir match programme, and top speakers will be lined up. A search for sponsors has begun and is progressing well.

A special section of the club website has been reserved for 50th anniversary details and stories, and anyone interested is asked to register to receive newsletters about the event.

Local journalist Calum McNicol, who is writing the history, is appealing for any old photographs of matches, teams and players. He said: "We've plenty of pix from the 90s onwards, but the 60s to 80s are pretty under represented so far." Calum can be contacted This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
