THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Roseneath Castle1158 viewsAn 1832 engraved print of Roseneath (as it was spelt in those days) Castle. Drawn by John Preston Neale and engraved by W.Wallis, it was published by Jones and Co. of Finsbury Square, London. Completed in 1806 by London-based architect Joseph Bonomi, this neo-classical mansion replaced a castle burnt down in 1802. It was used as a military hospital during the First World War and was home to Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, until her death in 1939. It was an HQ for the Rosneath Naval Base in World War Two, then abandoned, then damaged by fire in 1947, and finally demolished in 1961.

Rhu wedding919 viewsAlice McDougall kindly supplied this picture of the wedding of her parents, Mr and Mrs Alexander Rankin Gold, in Rhu on July 16 1936. They were married from Armadale House in Rhu where her mother, Flora MacKinnon, worked for Colonel Kenneth Barge as a cook and where this picture was taken. Alice says: "Lydia Barge is the older girl seated in front of my father. My grandparents from Brechin are beside my father. My grandfather from Skye ibeside my mother. Beside him is Auntie Lottie an her husband John Cree who lived in Craigendoran, and their daughter is the other little girl. She had a shop at the east end of Helensburgh at one time I believe. Behind John Cree is Colonel Barge and behind his right shoulder is, I believe Nigel Barge."

Provost's Lamps1176 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
