David-Clyde-De-Havilland5351.jpg
David Clyde with Olivia de Havilland657 viewsDavid Clyde, the oldest of three siblings from a Helensburgh family who all became well known actors, played the butler in the 1943 film Princess O'Rourke, a comedy romance written and directed by Norman Krasna and starring Olivia de Havilland (left) as the princess and Charles Coburn (right) as her uncle. A pilot (Robert Cummings) falls in love with a woman he believes is intending to become a maid, little suspecting that she is actually a princess. It won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Seafront602 viewsAn early image of Helensburgh seafront, looking from the pier to the east side of the town. As there is no bandstand, it must have been taken before 1906. Image kindly supplied by Robert Ryan.

Transatlantic transmission598 viewsAn October 3 1929 newspaper image of John Logie Baird and his TV equipment. The caption on a companion picture stated: "One more dream of science has been realised. Man's vision has spanned the Ocean, and transatlantic television has been demonstrated to be a reality. A man and a woman sat before an electric eye in a London laboratory last night, and a group of people in a darkened basement in the village of Hartsdale, New York, watched them turn their heads and move from side to side. The images were crude and broken, but they were images nevertheless."

Old Parish Church612 viewsThe Old Parish Church on Helensburgh seafront, circa 1970, which stood on the seafront and later became a Church of Scotland centre for servicemen and women. Lucy-Ashton-test-bed-w.jpg
Lucy Ashton as test bed4 viewsThe steamer Lucy Ashton operated the Craigendoran - Gareloch - Greenock service from the early 1900s until she was withdrawn during the Second World War. In 1949 she was sold for scrap, but received a last minute reprieve when the British Shipbuilding Research Association converted her to a jet-powered hull to conduct resistance experiments to analyse the impact of drag and friction on a full-scale ship hull. She was fitted with four Rolls-Royce Derwent V engines, which would not disturb the water in the same way as a propeller and shaft, then was scrapped in 1951.
