Arrochar-Station6.jpg
Arrochar Station1085 viewsFor many years Arrochar and Tarbet Station on the West Highland Line was the destination of a local service known as the 'Wee Arrochar' which ran several times a day from Craigendoran. It was a push-and-pull train with a tank engine always at the Craigendoran-bound end. Image date unknown.

Hermitage-stones-w.jpg
Hermitage carvings1748 viewsCarvings from the frontage saved after the old Hermitage School in East Argyle Street was demolished. It was built in 1880 in late Gothic style for the School Board of Row on land formerly part of Hermitage House made available by the Cramb family, and demolished in 1977 by George Hood & Co. Ltd. This image compilation is from photos taken by Stewart Noble of the carvings, now in the garden of the home of Mr Hood's son Charlie.
Cardross_Station3041.jpg
Cardross Station875 viewsA picture of a mystery celebration at Cardross Station. The bunting and Union Jacks, the waiting horse drawn carriages — and one early car — and the finery of the people in suggests a very special occasion, perhaps the opening of part of the station, or troops returning from the First World War, or even a royal visit? However it is believed to be the arrival of guests attending a wedding. The station was opened on January 15 1858, the line was doubled in 1883, and the bridge was built the following year.
Puffer-VIC-32-at-Narrows-w.jpg
Puffer VIC 32524 viewsThe puffer VIC 32, also known as Auld Reekie, passes Rosneath's historic Ferry Inn while steaming through Rhu Narrows on May 3 2017. VIC 32 was built by Dunston’s of Thorne, Yorkshire, at Rowhedge in November 1943. This was a busy time for the Clyde shipbuilding yards and the Admiralty needed 50 — later 100 — victualling boats in a hurry. So they were built in groups of three by various different yards in England. In 1989 the “Friends of VIC 32” group was started, a money raising venture in case of an engineering or other crisis, and there are now hundreds of Friends. The vessel is operated by Puffer Steamboat Holidays Ltd. and offers five day cruises in the West Highlands each summer. Photo by Stewart Noble.

Shipbreaking_Industries.jpg
Faslane shipbreaking284 viewsThe Shipbreaking Industries yard at Faslane, clearly illustrating that they broke up old railway locomotives as well as ships. After Faslane had been a military port in World War Two, at the end of 1945 the southern section was handed over to the Royal Navy who used it as a base for the Reserve Fleet. In August 1946 the rest was handed over to Metal Industries (later Shipbreaking Industries) for shipbreaking. Many famous vessels ended their days there, including the last four-funnelled liner, the Aquitania, the German battleship Derflinger which had been scuttled at Scapa Flow, and the last battleship built for the Royal Navy, HMS Vanguard. Cairndhu-GF-w.jpg
Cairndhu271 viewsThe magnificent William Leiper-designed Helensburgh seafront mansion Cairndhu, which is now boarded up, pictured in its heyday by Gordon Fraser. It was built for Glasgow businessman John Ure, who later became Lord Provost of Glasgow, in the style of a miniature French chateau, with stained glass windows by Daniel Cottier. The mansion remained a private home until the Second World War. In September 1940 it was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and became home to part of HMS Vernon, along with neighbouring Ardencaple Castle. for degaussing operations. In 1947 Cairndhu was returned to private ownership and became a hotel and then a nursing home.Nov 25, 2018
