MAEE tested Dambusters bombs

THURSDAY MAY 17 2018 was the 75th anniversary of a major event in World War Two which had very significant Helensburgh connections.

Cinemas throughout the UK showed the epic and moving 1955 film “The Dam Busters”, starring Michael Redgrave and Richard Todd, which recreated the true story of Operation Chastise when in 1943 the RAF’s 617 Squadron attacked the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams in Nazi Germany with Barnes Wallis’s bouncing bomb

Popular Provost was innovator

IF THERE is one name from Helensburgh’s civic past — apart from Henry Bell — which still resonates today, it is that of Breingan.

You only have to google the name of Alexander Breingan, and without even opening any websites you find that he was the first captain of Helensburgh Golf Club — and the Breingan Medal, presented in 1894, is the club’s oldest trophy.

Holy sisters revered on Garelochside

ON THE HILLSIDE above Garelochhead there is a small sandstone monument near the B833.

Along a signposted track created by Ghurkas in 1992 and next to a picnic table, it is inscribed only: “Here Isabella Campbell was wont to pray.”
