Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

The Bowling Obelisk973 viewsThis memorial to Henry Bell, erected in 1839, stands in the grounds of the semi-derelict Dunglas Castle, which is within a secure area owned by Esso to which entry cannot be obtained. This image was taken by Heritage Trust chairman Stewart Noble while on board the paddle steamer Waverley in 2011.

The tower, originally part of the Old Parish Church, was being repaired by local builders A.Trail & Son who also built the adjacent Tower Place flats on the church site.

Larchfield School2756 viewsLarchfield Academy (often called Larchfield School) was a preparatory school for boys in Colquhoun Street, founded in 1858. Among its famous pupils were author Sir James Frazer and TV inventor John Logie Baird. In the late 1920s and early 1930s Cecil Day-Lewis and W.H.Auden taught there briefly. The school merged with St Bride's School for Girls in 1977 to form Lomond School. In 1998 Larchfield was sold to Cala Homes who converted into 11 flats and built 14 new flats at the rear.

Wonder of Woolies-11693 viewsLocal historian Pat Drayton is seen with members of staff outside the Woolworths store in West Clyde Street, Helensburgh, in October 1997. She won a competition to perform the official opening of a new look store after extensive refurbishment and was treated to a champagne breakfast before the opening. The store was open for many years until it closed in January 2009 when the chain went into administration.

The Ferry Inn811 viewsThe famous Ferry Inn at Rosneath, circa 1910. The Edwin Lutyens-designed building was commissioned by Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, in the 1890s and rebuilt from an old pub. Bob Hope stayed there while entertaining troops at the nearby World War Two naval base. It fell into disuse, but was rebuilt again in the late 1950s by boatbuilder Peter Boyle.

Ploughing medal247 viewsThis Sterling Medal Victorian Watch Fob, described as a stunning example of the workmanship coming out of the United Kingdom during the mid-19th century, was sold on ebay and fetched over £700. It was presented in 1854 by the Cardross Ploughing Association, affiliated with the Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland and founded in 1784 to promote the regeneration of rural Scotland, as well as the preservation of its poetry, language and music. It was inscribed 'Gained two successive years by John King'.

Provost's Lamps1176 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
