PS Maid of the Loch1198 viewsThe 555 ton Maid of the Loch was the last paddle steamer built in Britain, and the last of a long line of Loch Lomond steamers beginning about 1816. Built by A. & J.Inglis of Glasgow, she was dismantled, shipped by rail to Balloch where the sections were reassembled, and launched on March 5 1953. Her last commercial sailing was in August 1981, and now she is looked after at Balloch Pier — where this picture was taken in 1968 — by the Maid of the Loch Preservation Society.

The Hermit's Well1198 viewsGardeners are at work and a family are having a picnic in this picture of the Hermit's Well in Hermitage Park. Image circa 1920, nine years after the park was created after the Town Council purchased the grounds from the Cramb family for £3,750. Legend has it that a hermit once lived in the park, and the Hermit's Well, with its copper ladle, granted a wish to those who drank from it. It is there to this day, but is not maintained in a good condition.

The Talisker1198 viewsThe steamboat Talisker heads off from Helensburgh pier during the bicentenary celebrations on Saturday August 4. A Helensburgh resident, Tom Peebles, built the vessel and its engine when he lived in the town, and at that time he was engineer for the Rhu RNLI lifeboat. Talisker was taken by trailer to his new home in Perthshire to be completed, and returned to Rhu by trailer for the celebrations. Photo by Norman MacLeod.

Hover travel1195 viewsThe Clyde Hover Ferries Westland SRN6 hovercraft, which operated a service from Craigendoran pier to Greenock from 1965-6 is pictured arriving at Craigendoran pier. Powered by a Bristol-Siddeley Marine Gnome engine, it was 48 foot long, could carry 48 passengers, and had a maximum speed over calm water of 64 knots. However the service attracted fewer passengers than hoped for, and did not prove viable. Image supplied by Robert Whitton.

World record1195 viewsA multi-view postcard issued to mark Kaye Don setting a world water speed record on Loch Lomond on July 18 1932 in Miss England 111, when he was timed at 119.81 mph. On the back of the card it states: "Miss England 111 owned by Lord Wakefield, and driven by Kaye Don, cost £40,000 to build.
