Waverley at Helensburgh1245 viewsA print of a painting by Ian Orchardson, who lived in Saltcoats where he taught as an art teacher and died in 1997. He left teaching to concentrate full time on his interest of painting Clyde shipping, including steamers and clippers, as well as the series of six famous 'Doon the Water' stops of Helensburgh Pier, Dunoon Pier, Gourock Pier, Greenock Pier, Rothesay Pier and Wemyss Bay. His paintings give an authentic feel of shipping on the Clyde in times past, and examples of his work are highly sought after.

Hover travel1245 viewsThe Clyde Hover Ferries Westland SRN6 hovercraft, which operated a service from Craigendoran pier to Greenock from 1965-6 is pictured arriving at Craigendoran pier. Powered by a Bristol-Siddeley Marine Gnome engine, it was 48 foot long, could carry 48 passengers, and had a maximum speed over calm water of 64 knots. 1245 viewsThe pier at Barremman, Clynder, built about 1877 on the instructions of Robert Thom, owner of Barremman Estate, is pictured, circa 1903. It was blown up by the Army in November 1967 as it was the cheapest way to demolish the pier, which had become unsafe.

Water trip1244 viewsHelensburgh town councillors and officials at the opening of the Sinclair Street water pump house on June 10 1926. This was part of the annual inspection of the waterworks, and the company then went on to Glen Fruin but "on arrival here a heavy fall of rain made it undesirable to visit the source of supply, and the usual game of pitch and toss having been played and refreshments partaken of, the journey continued to Aberfoyle. Once there luncheon was served in the Bailie Nicol Jarvie Hotel". Image donated to the Heritage Trust by John Stirling whose father James N.Stirling is in centre of the back row. His father was the burgh surveyor and water engineer, taking up the post in 1912 and continuing until 1946.

“A Fresh Day, Portincaple, Loch Long†by Violet Kay1242 viewsViolet MacNeish Kay (1914–1971) was the daughter of well known artist James Kay (1858–1942), who designed their house Crimea on a hill at Whistlefield, overlooking Loch Long, and it is this view that is the subject of many of their paintings. This painting was acquired in 2009 by the Anderson Trust.

Bob Hope at Rosneath1240 viewsHugely popular American entertainer Bob Hope visited United States Navy Base Two at Rosneath with a concert party in 1945, and is seen arriving with Frances Langford and Jerry Colona. Afterwards there was a post-show party at the Princess Louise Officers Club, the Ferry Inn. Shandon Hydro1239 viewsThe Shandon Hydropathic Hotel. Originally West Shandon, this magnificent building was the home of Robert Napier, the greatest figure in Clyde shipbuilding and marine engineering in the mid-19th century. During World War One the Hydro became a hospital, and in World War Two it was used by the army. In 1951 it became a hotel again, but in 1957 it was closed and demolished. Image date unknown.
