Cairndhu and Ferniegair1129 viewsTwo of Helensburgh's biggest mansions, Cairndhu and, on the right, Fergiegair — home of the Kidston family and demolished in the 1960s. Cairndhu was built in 1871 by architect William Leiper for John Ure, then Provost of Glasgow, and Ferniegair was built in 1869 by architect John Honeyman. Behind is Ardencaple Quadrant, built originally to house those who had been injured in the First World War. Image circa 1960.

Ferry Inn, Rosneath1126 viewsThe Edwin Lutyens-designed Ferry Inn was commissioned by Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, in the 1890s and rebuilt from an old pub. Bob Hope stayed there while entertaining troops at the nearby World War Two naval base. It fell into disuse, but was rebuilt again in the late 1950s by boatbuilder Peter Boyle and renamed Ferry House. Image circa 1972.

Helensburgh Golf Club1124 viewsThe golf club was formed in 1893, and this image of the clubhouse is circa 1910. At that time the subscription for ordinary members was £1 11s 6d, and for lady and junior members 16 shillings. The 18-hole course was described as “of singular excellence†and this clubhouse as “one of the best equipped in Scotland. Tom Turnbull was the professional from 1895 for 50 years.
