Sir Iain Colquhoun of Luss1369 viewsSir Iain Colquhoun DSO (1887-1948), 7th Baronet of Luss, Chief of Clan Colquhoun, and Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, was pictured on the steps of the family home, Rossdhu, Luss — now the exclusive Loch Lomond Golf Club — by Robert Thorburn, a keen amateur photographer and grocery store manager who moved to the burgh before 1900. Sugar ship1368 viewsThe 8,325 ton Greek cargo ship Captayannis lying on a sandbank near to Ardmore Point. On the evening of January 27 1974 the area suffered from a terrific storm which blew the vessel from its anchor and caused it to collide with the BP tanker British Light. The anchor chains of the tanker holed the sugar boat, allowing water to pour into her, so she was beached in the shallow waters over the sandbank. It was designed by the celebrated golfer Willie Fernie who that day played Ben Sayers over the 18 holes. They carded 76 and 77 respectively. Hermitage Park War Memorial1364 viewsThe War Memorial in Hermitage Park, circa 1930. In those days the pond was full, but nowadays it is empty for safety reasons. Designed by well known local architect Alexander Nisbet Paterson after a campaign by his father-in-law, artist J.Whitelaw Hamilton, one of the 'Glasgow Boys', the War Memorial was completed in 1923. A service is held in the Garden of Remembrance on the Sunday nearest to November 11.
