St-Mahew_s-Chapel-w.jpg
St Mahew's Chapel931 viewsThe Chapel of St Mahew at Kirkton of Kilmahew, Cardross. For many years a derelict graveyard surrounding the ruin of a small mediaeval chapel, the land became the property of the Archdiocese of Glasgow in 1948, and they decided to restore the ruined chapel. The work began in 1953, under the direction of Ian G.Lindsay and Partners of Edinburgh, and was brought to a successful conclusion within the Octave of the Ascension, May 22 1955, when the Archbishop of Glasgow, the Most Rev Donald A.Campbell, DD, celebrated in it the first Pontifical Mass after a lapse of some four centuries. It is structurally the church which was built in 1467, but a small vestry was added.

Swedish toast924 viewsHelensburgh was not the only place where the bicentenary of Henry Bell’s Comet was remembered on Saturday August 4 2012 — a toast was proposed in Sweden. As he had done 50 years earlier, retired naval architect Gerhard Schack, an octogenarian, raised a glass in tribute to the man who pioneered commercial steamships. This is a picture of the Comet model he made himself.

Guthrie_girl.jpg
Portrait mystery923 viewsSir James Guthrie (1859-1930), who lived much of his life at Rhu and Helensburgh and was the leader of the now famous Glasgow Boys, painted this portrait of a young girl. Art collector Jim Smith from Blantyre owns the 24 x 18s ins charcoal and crayon drawing, and would love to know who the young lady subject was.
