Kilmahew Castle1003 viewsKilmahew Castle at Cardross was built on land granted to the Napier family by Malcolm, the Earl of Lennox, around 1290. The castle, originally a four-storey 16th century tower house, was built in the 16th century by the Napiers, who owned it until 1820. The estate had to be sold to pay off the last Laird's gambling debts.The ruins were acquired by the Archdiocese of Glasgow, with the surrounding estate, in 1948, and the now derelict St Peter's Priests Training College was built nearby. He was a keen walker and photographer, and took a number of pictures in the Glen Mallan and Glen Douglas areas. The cottage was demolished about 1961 when the military jetty was built there. 1940 colour demonstration1001 viewsThe first public demonstration of John Logie Baird's 120-line system to transmit colour films on to a large screen took place at the Dominion Theatre in London on February 4 1938, with a second demonstration from Crystal Palace on February 17. He used the electronic system to produce a 600-line two by two and a half feet screen image on a colour Tele-Radiogram. This December 1940 image is of a press demonstration, and the lady beside the set is Paddy Naismith. The picture on the screen is a photograph.

Panel unveiling997 viewsA new panel featuring information about the town, including references to Henry Bell and his ground breaking invention, was unveiled by 'Mr Bell' on Helensburgh seafront as part of the bicentenary celebrations on Saturday August 4 2012. The panel replaces an earlier version which was one of ten put in place to encourage motorists to explore ‘The Clyde Sea Lochs Trail’, a scenic coastal route from Dumbarton via Cardoss, Helensburgh, Rhu, Garelochhead and the Rosneath Peninsula to Arrochar.
