Sketch of St Bride's Church1092 viewsA sketch of St Bride's Church, which stood in West King Street at the junction with John Street. It is from the book 'Sketches of Churches and Clergy, published by Macneur and Bryden Ltd. of Helensburgh in 1889. Originally known as the West Parish Church, St Bride's Church was opened on March 10 1878. Its first minister was the Rev John Baird, father of TV inventor John Logie Baird. In 1981 it was united with the then Old and St Andrew's Church in Colquhoun Square to become the West Kirk, and a few years later it was demolished and replaced by a new burgh library and flats.

Glenda Mallon1091 viewsGlenda Mallon was born Jessie Ronald and grew up on Loch Longside, attending Glenmallon School then Hermitage School. She trained as an opera singer and chose Glenda Mallon as her stage name. She sang at Glyndebourne and with touring opera companies, and also was a backing singer who worked with stars such at Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas and Tom Jones. Now Mrs Jessie Nickell, she lives with her husband at St Albans.

Bought from the Duke of Argyll in 1877 for £650 by William Kidston with help from Sir James Colquhoun and others, it was formerly Cairndhu Point — known locally as Neddy's Point after a well known fisherman and ferryman who lived nearby — but was renamed Kidston Park from 1889 when Mr Kidston left money to support its maintenance and requested the name change.
