Shandon Hydro fish pond1088 viewsA fish pond in the grounds of Shandon Hydropathic Hotel. Originally West Shandon, the magnificent building was the home of Robert Napier, the greatest figure in Clyde shipbuilding and marine engineering in the mid-19th century. During World War One the Hydro became a hospital, and in World War Two it was used by the army. In 1951 it became a hotel again, but in 1957 it was closed and demolished. Image circa 1910.

It records a less familiar view of the loch and was a welcome addition to the two other paintings by this artist held in the Trust Collection, 'Evening on the Gareloch' and 'Ebb Tide', an idyllic view of Helensburgh’s West Clyde Street. Redgauntlet1085 viewsThe Clyde paddle steamer Redgauntlet saw service as a World War One minesweeper. Built by Barclay Curle in 1895 for the North British Railway, she served on the Craigendoran to Rothesay route. In August 1899 she ran on to rocks off Arran in a gale and was badly holed, but the captain ran her up the beach so that crew and passengers could be rescued. After repairs, she was moved to the Forth in 1909 and then sold to the Galloway Steam Packet Company. Later she went to Algeria and was broken up about 1934.
