New panel1374 views'Henry Bell' unveiled a new panel featuring information about the town, including references to himself and his ground breaking invention, on Helensburgh seafront as part of the bicentenary celebrations on Saturday August 4 2012. The panel replaces an earlier version which was one of ten put in place to encourage motorists to explore ‘The Clyde Sea Lochs Trail’, a scenic coastal route from Dumbarton via Cardoss, Helensburgh, Rhu, Garelochhead and the Rosneath Peninsula to Arrochar. 150th anniversary booklet1121 viewsThis illustrated booklet was published by the Comet Trust, based at Lithgows Ltd. in Port Glasgow, to mark the 150th anniversary and was printed by James Paton Ltd. of Paisley, price one shilling. It was sold in aid of the Comet Trust Fund, established to provide travelling scholarships for shipbuilding apprentices. It told the story of Henry Bell, and also of the building of the 1962 Comet replica.

This image was taken by Heritage Trust chairman Stewart Noble while on board the paddle steamer Waverley in 2011.

The Comet replica939 viewsThe 150th anniversary of Henry Bell's Comet was celebrated on September 18 1962 when a replica of the Comet arrived at Helensburgh Pier from Port Glasgow as part of a special regatta. Construction of the working replica was sponsored by Sir William Lithgow, and it is now on permanent display in Port Glasgow town centre.
