Swedish toast870 viewsHelensburgh was not the only place where the bicentenary of Henry Bell’s Comet was remembered on Saturday August 4 2012 — a toast was proposed in Sweden. As he had done 50 years earlier, retired naval architect Gerhard Schack, an octogenarian, raised a glass in tribute to the man who pioneered commercial steamships. This is a picture of the Comet model he made himself.

Shows no more863 viewsAn Argyll and Bute Council report has recommended that the lease granted to Codona's Amusements for its site next to Helensburgh pier should not be renewed when it expires in November because of the project for a multi-million pound 'centrepiece' development for the town on the waterfront. The shows have been operated by the family firm in summer for several decades. Photo by Stewart Noble.
