Municipal Buildings cat1131 viewsThis cat was a flight of fancy by architect and watercolourist Alexander Nisbet Paterson who was commissioned to design an extension to the Municipal Buildings in 1902 which was completed in 1906. The cat had become the pet of the builders, so the architect, a cat lover, immortalised it in stone on the second storey on the Sinclair Street side. As the extension housed the police station, he also added two pairs of stone handcuffs above the door. Image taken and supplied by Donald Fullarton.

Vintage car crash1130 viewsMacneur & Bryden Ltd. in East Princes Street, Helensburgh, publishers of the Helensburgh and Gareloch Times weekly newspaper, printed and published this road accident photograph as a postcard, with the heading 'The Effect of a Motor Collision at Helensburgh'. It took place on June 4 1906 at the junction of Glasgow Street and West Princes Street. The car on the left belonged to Mr F.McAlpine of Helensburgh, and the other to Mr Kirkpatrick of Lagbuie, Shandon.

Hermitage Hospital fundraising1129 viewsDuring World War One from 1914-18 the Helensburgh Town Council-owned Hermitage House in Hermitage Park became a military hospital with a capacity for 58 patients who were sent from Stobhall Hospital in Glasgow. The wounded men in their blue uniforms were a familiar sight in the town, being wheeled around the park by their nurses. A number of local ladies and girls helped out in the hospital and the local Red Cross detachment also assisted the trained nurses. Patients also raised funds.
