Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Ferry Inn, Rosneath2448 viewsThe Edwin Lutyens-designed Ferry Inn was commissioned by Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, in the 1890s and rebuilt from an old pub. Bob Hope stayed there while entertaining troops at the nearby World War Two naval base. It fell into disuse, but was rebuilt again in the late 1950s by boatbuilder Peter Boyle. Image is undated.

St-Modan_s-old-church-w.jpg
Old St Modan's146 viewsThe ancient Rosneath St Modan's church was taken down in 1780, with the exception of the belfry which was preserved. It was on the site of the present pre-19th century parish church which is about 100 yards east of the old cemetery, which contains the ivy-covered ruins of the 18th century place of worship which itself succeeded a pre-Reformation structure. Image date unknown.

Post Office team1325 viewsMOST of the players in this happy Helensburgh Post Office team are known . . . but when was the picture taken and why? In the back row are J.J.Fraser, F.M.Taylor, D.Cavana, J.Marshall, Charlie Friel, J.A.Munro, Alec Russell, and postmaster J.Sked. In the front row, only Inglis Robb (centre) and John Jardine (on his left) have been identified. Please contact the editor if you can supply more information.

Redgauntlet and Kenilworth988 viewsThe North British Railway steamers Redgauntlet and Kenilworth are pictured at Craigendoran Pier in this excellent 1905 picture. A cart loaded with coal is waiting on the left to refuel the Redgauntlet after the passengers have alighted.

Rhu wedding919 viewsAlice McDougall kindly supplied this picture of the wedding of her parents, Mr and Mrs Alexander Rankin Gold, in Rhu on July 16 1936. They were married from Armadale House in Rhu where her mother, Flora MacKinnon, worked for Colonel Kenneth Barge as a cook and where this picture was taken. Alice says: "Lydia Barge is the older girl seated in front of my father. My grandparents from Brechin are beside my father. My grandfather from Skye ibeside my mother. Beside him is Auntie Lottie an her husband John Cree who lived in Craigendoran, and their daughter is the other little girl. She had a shop at the east end of Helensburgh at one time I believe. Behind John Cree is Colonel Barge and behind his right shoulder is, I believe Nigel Barge."

Upper Morelaggan884 viewsUpper Morelaggan on Loch Longside, the scene recently of major excavations of a rural settlement which dates back to 1501. The artist was Dunfermline-born Waller Hugh Paton, who has been described as the leading exponent of the Pre-Raphaelite landscape in Scotland and who exhibited views — mostly painted on Arran — at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1854. This small 1875 watercolour, which is signed and dated, was on offer at £1,800. Image supplied by Ewan Mundy Fine Art, Glasgow.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1156 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
