THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

T.S. Cumberland1205 viewsTRAINING SHIPS were moored in the Gareloch off Kidston Point from 1869 for 54 years. The first was HMS Cumberland, after which Cumberland Avenue in Helensburgh and the much older Cumberland Terrace in Rhu were named. Built in 1842 at Chatham, she was a 2,214-ton two-deck 70-gun man o'war, 180 feet long, with a crew of up to 620 men. In 1869 she was taken over for use as a training vessel by the newly formed Clyde Industrial Training Ship Association. This image, one of only two known images of the vessel, is reproduced by kind permission of Dundee City Archives. The other can be seen on the Trust website.

The photo was taken by Professor Richard Rose in September 1967, and he believes that it was removed about 10 to 15 years later. Any further information would be welcome.

Puffer VIC 32770 viewsThe puffer VIC 32 passes Rosneath's historic Ferry Inn while steaming through Rhu Narrows on May 3 2017. VIC 32 was built by Dunston’s of Thorne, Yorkshire, at Rowhedge in November 1943. This was a busy time for the Clyde shipbuilding yards and the Admiralty needed 50 — later 100 — victualling boats in a hurry. So they were built in groups of three by various different yards in England. In 1989 the “Friends of VIC 32†group was started, a money raising venture in case of an engineering or other crisis, and there are now hundreds of Friends. The vessel is operated by Puffer Steamboat Holidays Ltd. and offers five day cruises in the West Highlands each summer. Photo by Stewart Noble.

Greenock exhibition715 viewsThe small permanent exhibition on Henry Bell and the Comet in the McLean Museum and Art Gallery in Greenock. The model is one of two very early ones made of the Comet (perhaps builders models?) and its twin is in the Science Museum in Kensington, London. The museum has other artefacts which were salvaged from the wreck of the second Comet, but these are not currently on display. Photo by Stewart Noble.

Provost's Lamps1156 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
