Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Dandie_Dinmont_at_Shandon.jpg
Dandie Dinmont at Shandon Pier1176 viewsThe 195 feet 218 ton Dandie Dinmont, the second steamer to bear the name, was built in 1895 by A. and J.Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow, for the North British Steam Packet Company for use on the Craigendoran to Dunoon and Holy Loch routes, and remained on station during World War One. After being laid up in 1926 and 1927, the following year she went to the London and North Eastern Railway for the Hull to Holland ferry service and was renamed PS Frodingham. She was broken up in Belgium in 1936.
Susie_s_Castle.jpg
Susie's Castle1106 viewsBorn in 1847, Susie Reid was a well-known character, not only at Portincaple, where she lived for many years until her death at 81, but also much further afield. Susie's personality would probably have been enough to make her a local celebrity, but the extra factor that ensured her a place in the hall of fame lay in the fact that her home was an upturned fishing smack. Her story is told in the People section of the Trust website. This image, published by McPhail & McIntyre, Whistlefield, is circa 1913.
Geilston-House.jpg
Geilston House478 viewsGeilston House in Cardross, former home of Miss Elizabeth Hendry and Miss Margaret Bell, now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Dating from 1666 or earlier, it began as a modest thatched laird's house, was expanded to become a villa, and finally a decorated cottage linked to a walled garden. The entire house appears to have been thatched until the early 19th century. Its extensive 200 year-old garden is a popular tourist attraction. Photo by Stewart Noble.

Colquhoun Street967 viewsLooking north up Colquhoun Street from above Argyle Street when the cherry blossom trees were in bloom. This 20th century image was published by Macneur and Bryden Ltd. of East Princes Street, publishers of the Helensburgh and Gareloch Times. Image date unknown.
Clyde-Hovercraft-w.jpg
Hovercraft at speed894 viewsThe Clyde Hover Ferries Westland SRN6 hovercraft, which operated a service from Craigendoran pier to Greenock from 1965-6 is pictured. Powered by a Bristol-Siddeley Marine Gnome engine, it was 48 foot long, could carry 48 passengers, and had a maximum speed over calm water of 64 knots. However the service attracted fewer passengers than hoped for, and did not prove viable.

At the back of the hall are workshops, while to the right is part of the remains of the Malig Mill which was demolished in 1922. Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1096 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
