Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

She was the second of two charitable training ships for boys, and was in the Gareloch from 1889 until the 1920s, with staff giving a tough and sometimes brutal training to the 300 boys on board at any time. Deborah Kerr at 70610 viewsHelensburgh film star Deborah Kerr, who was one of the judges, is seen at the 1990 European Film Awards at in the entrance to Glasgow Royal Concert Hall with Helensburgh man David Bruce, who was Director of the Scottish Film Council and was mainly responsible for bringing the event to Glasgow. It was also attended by a number of international film stars, including Jeanne Moreau, Max von Sydow, Nastassia Kinski, Kenneth Branagh and Richard Attenborough. Susie's Castle1153 viewsSusie of Portincaple is pictured at Susie’s Castle, circa 1910. She lived for 60 years in the upturned fishing smack on the Loch Long shore, and postcards of her home were sold. She and her fisherman husband Jamie came from Glasgow, and she sold the fish around the neighbourhood, as well as working as a maid in local big houses. After her husband died, she lived alone with five cats. In old age she seldom left her home, but she was a beautiful knitter and a great reader.

T.S. Cumberland1208 viewsTRAINING SHIPS were moored in the Gareloch off Kidston Point from 1869 for 54 years. The first was HMS Cumberland, after which Cumberland Avenue in Helensburgh and the much older Cumberland Terrace in Rhu were named. Built in 1842 at Chatham, she was a 2,214-ton two-deck 70-gun man o'war, 180 feet long, with a crew of up to 620 men. In 1869 she was taken over for use as a training vessel by the newly formed Clyde Industrial Training Ship Association. This image, one of only two known images of the vessel, is reproduced by kind permission of Dundee City Archives. The other can be seen on the Trust website.

Provost's Lamps1175 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
