Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Queen's Hotel Ballroom1105 viewsA 1934 image of the Ballroom at the Queen's Hotel, where countless local dances, wedding celebrations and other events were held. The hotel was originally Baths House, built by Henry Bell, who built Europe's first commercial steamship the Comet in 1812. The building has had many alterations but still stands on East Clyde Street, having been converted into flats.

PS Talisman822 viewsThe North British steamer Talisman, built in 1896 by A. & J.Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow, for the Craigendoran to Rothesay route. Undertook World War One service as HMS Talla sweeping mines at Troon and Portsmouth. On refit after the war, the deck saloon was extended the full width of the hull and the bridge was moved forward of the funnel. She was on the Rothesay and Kyles of Bute service until the end of the 1934 season, and then was scrapped at Barrow. Image circa 1920.

150th anniversary booklet1129 viewsThis illustrated booklet was published by the Comet Trust, based at Lithgows Ltd. in Port Glasgow, to mark the 150th anniversary and was printed by James Paton Ltd. of Paisley, price one shilling. It was sold in aid of the Comet Trust Fund, established to provide travelling scholarships for shipbuilding apprentices. It told the story of Henry Bell, and also of the building of the 1962 Comet replica.

1940 colour demonstration702 viewsThe first public demonstration of John Logie Baird's 120-line system to transmit colour films on to a large screen took place at the Dominion Theatre in London on February 4 1938, with a second demonstration from Crystal Palace on February 17. He used the electronic system to produce a 600-line two by two and a half feet screen image on a colour Tele-Radiogram. This December 1940 image is of a press demonstration, and the lady beside the set is Paddy Naismith. The picture on the screen is a photograph.

Provost's Lamps1154 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
