Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Rosneath Castle2507 viewsThe castle and grounds from the air. Completed in 1806 by London-based architect Joseph Bonomi, this neo-classical mansion replaced a castle burnt down in 1802. It was used as a military hospital during the First World War and was home to Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, until her death in 1939. It was an HQ for the Rosneath Naval Base in World War Two, then abandoned, then damaged by fire in 1947, and demolished in 1961. Image date unknown.

Bonar_Law_Balmoral_demo-w.jpg
Ulster demo716 viewsAndrew Bonar Law, recently elected leader of the Conservative Party and the Leader of the Opposition, was guest of honour at a meticulously planned Ulster unionist demonstration at the Royal Ulster Agricultural Showground at Balmoral on Easter Tuesday 1912. Whereas Winston Churchill’s speech in Celtic Park on 8 February 1912 had an audience of 5,000 nationalists and liberals, Law was astounded to find himself with an audience of between 100,000 and 200,000, one of the largest political demonstrations in British history. He spoke eloquently, invoking the siege of Derry as a paradigm for Ulster’s plight, identifying the Parliament Act of 1911 as the equivalent of the boom constructed by the Jacobites across the Foyle during the great siege.

Camis Eskan, circa 18401201 viewsThis painting by John Knox (1778-1845) shows some of the children of Colin Campbell of Colgrain fishing by the bridge in front of the remodelled house. He bought the estate in 1836 from James Dennistoun, the last of the Dennistouns of Colgrain, whose family had owned the land for over 500 years. The Dennistouns were granted the lands by the first Stuart king Robert II, who had married into the family, and whose son Robert III and all future Kings would have Dennistoun blood in their veins.

It was always a very popular hotel, and the building has had many alterations but still stands on East Clyde Street, having been converted into flats. This image shows the hotel's sun lounge, date unknown.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1156 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
