Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Jeanie Deans at Craigendoran1172 viewsThe paddle steamer Jeanie Deans was built by Fairfield at Govan and launched in 1931, then extensively refitted after war service. She remained a passenger favourite on cruises from Craigendoran until the end of the 1964 season. The next year she went to the Thames and was renamed 'Queen of the South'. She was broken up in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1967. Image circa 1949.

Ruth Brown's successful appeal1146 viewsHelensburgh woman Mrs Ruth Brown, wife of ex-Scotland manager Bobby Brown, took ill in 1978 with a form of blood cancer, and when she received treatment at Glasgow's Western Infirmary she discovered that there was an urgent need for a blood cell processor unit to assist diagnosis of rare blood diseases. So she set up the Ruth Brown Blood Cell Processor Fund in April 1982, and in a year she and Bobby raised over £16,000 to buy the unit and accessories. Sadly she died soon after presenting the unit.

Toll Cottage1450 viewsThe Toll Cottage at the top of Sinclair Street, Helensburgh, which in 2018-19 was substantially expanded and modernised, and is now a private dwelling. On the left is the mansion Ardluss. During World War Two it was planned to situate a roadblock at the cottage, using old tramlines placed in prepared holes, to keep out German invaders. The Gareloch, by Flint816 viewsThe Gareloch from Shandon, painted in 1918 by Sir William Russell Flint. Born in Edinburgh in 1880, Flint’s remarkable talent was discovered at an early age. He studied at the Royal Institution School of Art in Edinburgh and after serving an apprenticeship at a printing works, he moved to London aged 20 to become a medical illustrator. In 1903 he joined the Illustrated London News, then served in World War One and became Admiralty Assistant Overseer - Airships. After the war his artistic career flourished.

Selling Baird undersocks696 viewsOne of John Logie Baird's inventions was the Baird undersock, described as a specially medicated soft absorbent sheath worn next to the skin under the sock to absorb and neutralise perspiration, keeping feet clean and healthy. Said to be ideal for the soldier, and with tributes from men in the World War One trenches, they cost eight shillings for half a dozen pairs. Image date not known.

Provost's Lamps1169 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
