Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Helensburgh-West.jpg
Helensburgh West1171 viewsAn aerial view of west Helensburgh, showing Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club in the days of its original wooden pavilions, and the Helensburgh Football Club pitch at Ardencaple. The image, date unknown, is from the collection of William Orr of Rhu, who was at one time the Burgh Engineer before becoming the Assistant Engineer for Argyllshire, and it was supplied by his great nephew, Alistair Quinlan.
Craigs-pool-w.jpg
Craigs Pool835 viewsA view of the most popular summer picnic area in Glen Fruin, Craigs Pool.No apostrophe required, because it is not the pool belonging to, or associated with, anyone called Craig. As with Craigendoran (meaning ‘rock of the otter’) the craigs referred to are the big flagstones on the bottom of the pool. Craig is Gaelic for stone or rock and it is where the word crag or craggy comes from. Image, circa 2006, supplied by Gordon Fraser.
Baird-colour-tv2.jpg
Colour television949 viewsOn July 3 1928, John Logie Baird achieved colour television for the first time. The camera and receiver were modified versions of the mechanically scanned system first demonstrated by Baird in January 1926. Two months later he demonstrated his new discovery to a scientific audience in Glasgow at the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. The picture is an artistic reconstruction done in 1949 of the July demonstration at his company’s laboratory in London.

Gareloch and Rhu710 viewsA view of the Gareloch and Rhu taken during the Second World War. Image circa 1944.

Wishing Well1236 viewsThe Hermitage Park wishing well. Legend has it that a hermit lived in and gave his name to Hermitage Park. This wishing well was known as the Hermit's Well, and it was said that he granted a wish to those who drank from the copper ladle inside. It exists to this day, but is in a very poor state. Image date unknown.
Victoria_Road1671.jpg
Prince Albert Terrace1268 viewsThe Terrace in Victoria Road was built in the late 1870s by William Tait for the Cramb family, who owned Hermitage Park. It is said to have been built to such a height and facing north on the orders of the owners to obscure the view of the river from Lansdowne House opposite and overlook it, because Susannah Cramb had been jilted by a young man from Landsdowne. Novelist A.J.Cronin (1896-1981) lived in the Terrace, and contemporary portrait painter Stephen Conroy was born at no.3 in 1964.

1965 Royal visit1263 viewsThe Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are pictured in Helensburgh Central Station admiring a model of the first 'Blue Train' which was a gift for Prince Andrew. The Blue Trains were introduced into service on the Helensburgh-Glasgow line in 1960. The 15 minute visit was on Monday June 28 1965 when the royal couple were on their way to open new County Council offices at Garshake in Dumbarton, and the royal couple arrived at and left Clydebank on the royal yacht Britannia. Behind them are Provost J.McLeod (Cloudy) Williamson and the Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, Admiral Sir Angus Cunninghame Graham.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1154 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
