THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Rhu Boys Brigade840 viewsMembers of the Rhu company of the Boys Brigade are pictured at camp. The company existed from 1915 to 1925 when it folded because leaders could not be found. It was inspected at least twice by Lord Inverclyde, the then Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire. Image supplied by Alistair Quinlan, whose great uncle, Arthur Burnett Winton, is second from the left. Arthur's father ran Rhu Post Office, and he was a telegram boy. He spent most of his working life at Helensburgh Post Office and Helensburgh Telephone Exchange, and in his 20s played football for Rhu Amateurs.

S.S. Marmion732 viewsAn early image of the Clyde paddle steamer Marmion leaving Arrochar. The 403 ton vessel was launched on May 5 1906 by A and J Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow, and placed on the Loch Goil and Arrochar service for the North British SP. She was requisitioned for mineweeping duty at Dover from 1915 as HMS Marmion II, and returned to the Clyde for the 1920 season, then was laid up for a redesign. She returned to service in 1926 as an all-year-round vessel, was reboilered in 1932, then again was requisitioned for war service. She was stationed at Harwich and survived the Dunkirk evacuations, but was sunk by enemy bombers at Harwich on the night of April 8 1941. Later she was raised and scrapped.

Ballyhennan Church532 viewsSituated on the western edge of Tarbet beside the road to Arrochar, Ballyhennan Church was erected in 1844 as Arrochar Free Church, following the Disruption of the Church of Scotland. There was never an earlier church on the site. It was renamed Ballyhennan in 1929, but it closed for worship in 1966 and has had a variety of uses since then. Currently it is being used as a restaurant called Slanj. It is believed locally that the neighbouring graveyard may contain the bodies of Vikings who were killed in 1263. Provost's Lamps1154 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
