Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Shandon Bus Crash1347 viewsA Garelochhead Coach Service double decker bus lies on the beach at Shandon after an accident on the old lochside road in November 1965. Andrew Shirley from Rhu, who is researching the Garelochhead bus companies, believes this bus is MXX 177, one of the former London Transport RT class operated by the firm. It was repaired and put back into service.

Waverley at Craigendoran1020 viewsBuilt by A. & J.Inglis at Pointhouse, Glasgow in 1946, the 693-ton Waverley entered service in 1947 and is the world's last sea-going paddler. She replaced the previous Waverley, built in 1899 and sunk at Dunkirk in 1940, andcruised to all parts of the Clyde Estuary until withdrawn after the 1973 season by Caledonian-MacBrayne. Next year she was sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and re-entered service in 1975 with support from local authorities. She is pictured at Craigendoran pier in 1972.

Helensburgh Golf Club1120 viewsThe golf club was formed in 1893, and this image of the clubhouse is circa 1910. At that time the subscription for ordinary members was £1 11s 6d, and for lady and junior members 16 shillings. The 18-hole course was described as “of singular excellence†and this clubhouse as “one of the best equipped in Scotland. Tom Turnbull was the professional from 1895 for 50 years.

They offered costumes, mantles and blouses, and were glovers, hosiers, and outfitters. They also supplied household linen, blankets, flannels and Scotch Wincey. The Gents Department offered hats, caps, shirts, gloves, 'cellular clothing', 'Scotch Underwear", and featherweight tourist waterproof coats. Image circa 1910.

Provost's Lamps1094 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
