Rosneath Castle1856 viewsThe castle and grounds from the air. Completed in 1806 by London-based architect Joseph Bonomi, this neo-classical mansion replaced a castle burnt down in 1802. It was used as a military hospital during the First World War and was home to Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, until her death in 1939. It was an HQ for the Rosneath Naval Base in World War Two, then abandoned, then damaged by fire in 1947, and demolished in 1961. Image circa 1939.

The former ski instructor has appeared for the Royal Shakespeare Company, in films such as 'House of 9' with Denis Hopper, 'The Flying Scotsman' with Johnny Lee Miller, and 'The Young Victoria" with Emily Blunt, and on TV in 'Harley Street', 'Teachers', and 'Monday Monday'.

Royal Guide Colours918 viewsHRH Princess Louise, the Dowager Duchess of Argyll, who lived the later years of her life in Rosneath Castle, presents new colours to the 1st Rosneath Peninsula Girl Guides in 1928. On another occasion she presented the Union Flag to the 1st Cove and Kilcreggan Guides, and it is the oldest in the County of Dunbartonshire and still used in parades. Crimea lounge1380 viewsThe lounge of Crimea at Portincaple, full of paintings by eminent artist James Kay RSA RSW who lived there for 33 years and worked in a studio in Glasgow. It belonged to his brother Alec, a shipping office manager. The name was chosen when they moved there in 1909 because his father was a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy during the Crimean War, serving in the Black Sea area. James painted an elaborate mural of scenes from the Crimean on the walls of the main entrance. Image date unknown.

Lucy Ashton as test bed30 viewsThe steamer Lucy Ashton operated the Craigendoran - Gareloch - Greenock service from the early 1900s until she was withdrawn during the Second World War. In 1949 she was sold for scrap, but received a last minute reprieve when the British Shipbuilding Research Association converted her to a jet-powered hull to conduct resistance experiments to analyse the impact of drag and friction on a full-scale ship hull. She was fitted with four Rolls-Royce Derwent V engines, which would not disturb the water in the same way as a propeller and shaft, then was scrapped in 1951.
