Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

1903 Sinclair Street1964 viewsHelensburgh's Public Hall, the Victoria Hall, and Hermitage School are seen in this 1903 photograph from the top of the St Columba Church tower, looking up Sinclair Street, which was published as a postcard by J.Valentine & Co. of Dundee. It shows the chimney of the Malig (or Millig) Mill to the rear of the Victoria Hall.

Granary bus crash717 viewsA Garelochhead Coach Services bus crashed into the Granary Restaurant on West Clyde Street after careering down Sinclair Street when the brakes failed. The driver of a Saturday bus from Luss elected to hit the building rather than land on the shore, and was widely praised for his skill in avoiding pedestrians. No-one was seriously injured. Kidston Park bandstand914 viewsThe now demolished bandstand at Kidston Park. Bought from the Duke of Argyll in 1877 for £650 by William Kidston with help from Sir James Colquhoun and others, it was formerly Cairndhu Point — known locally as Neddy's Point after a well known fisherman and ferryman who lived nearby — but was renamed Kidston Park from 1889 when Mr Kidston left money to support its maintenance and requested the change. The bandstand was used by the boys bands from the Training Ships Cumberland and Empress. Image circa 1925.

Prince William-3797 viewsHRH Prince William of Wales visited HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane on October 19 2007 in his honorary Royal Navy capacity as Commodore-in-Chief Scotland and Submarines. He is pictured on board the Sandown class minehunter HMS Bangor, with Commodore Chris Hockley behind him, and he enjoyed a guided tour and lunch with the ship's company. Prince William is currently a serving Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry, also known as the Blues and Royals.

Auchendennan795 viewsAuchendennan House was from 1945 to 2013 a Youth Hostel and is reputed to have its own ghost. This view, circa 1956, shows Loch Lomond and Inchmurrin island beyond. Used for hunting by Robert the Bruce when he lived at Cardross, and then a church possession of Dunbarton, Auchendennan was feued about the time of Flodden to one of the Dennistouns, Andrew of Cardross, whose descendants held it for 100 years and then the Napiers of Kilmahew for another 100 years. The present mansion was built in 1867 by Glasgow merchant George Martin, and it is now back in private ownership.

Provost's Lamps1149 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
