Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Baird bust716 viewsA bust of John Logie Baird was unveiled in Hermitage Park, Helensburgh, in 1960 by his sister Miss Annie Baird, who was introduced by Provost J.McLeod Williamson. Some years later the bust was moved to a position on the seafront opposite William Street.

McCallum Milliners1303 viewsThe display in the ladies department at 21 West Clyde Street premises of McCallum & Sons, Milliners, Dressmakers & General Warehousemen, established 1820. They offered costumes, mantles and blouses, and were glovers, hosiers, and outfitters. They also supplied household linen, blankets, flannels and Scotch Wincey. The Gents Department offered hats, caps, shirts, gloves, 'cellular clothing', 'Scotch Underwear", and featherweight tourist waterproof coats. Image circa 1910.

Prince William-4888 viewsHRH Prince William of Wales visited HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane on October 19 2007 in his honorary Royal Navy capacity as Commodore-in-Chief Scotland and Submarines. He is pictured arriving at the base in one of the Royal Marines new high-speed offshore raiding craft, which he boarded at the Clyde Offsite Centre in Rhu and which he took control of for a time. Prince William is currently a serving Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry, also known as the Blues and Royals.

It sits on the boundary between Cove and Kilcreggan and has been known for many years as Cove Burgh Hall. In recent years it has been very successfully run by a local committee who acquired it from the local authority for a nominal sum.

Hovercraft at speed897 viewsThe Clyde Hover Ferries Westland SRN6 hovercraft, which operated a service from Craigendoran pier to Greenock from 1965-6 is pictured. Powered by a Bristol-Siddeley Marine Gnome engine, it was 48 foot long, could carry 48 passengers, and had a maximum speed over calm water of 64 knots. However the service attracted fewer passengers than hoped for, and did not prove viable.

Provost's Lamps1156 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
