Arrochar paths leaflet launched

A NEW leaflet promoting the range of routes available to walkers in Arrochar and the surrounding area has been launched.

The leaflet, published by the Arrochar and Tarbet Community Development Trust, was funded by the Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs’ Business in the Park scheme, and its design was supported by the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Not in the exhibition!

THIS is the painting visitors to the latest Anderson Trust Local Collection exhibition in Helensburgh Library in West King Street will not see.

The theme of the exhibition, which is open until June, is ‘Sea Lochs and Rivers”, and it had been hoped to include this work by Rhu artist Dr Charles Blatherwick RSW (1836-95) — who featured in Eye on Millig in the autumn.

Book tells Trident story

THE INSIDE story of Britain’s Faslane-based nuclear deterrent has been written by a former Commodore Clyde.

A new book by Helensburgh man Eric Thompson MBE, 'On Her Majesty's Nuclear Service', will be published by Casemate UK on February 28.

Academy seeks names for WW1 memorial

PUPILS and staff at Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh are appealing for the help of the public to find the names of former teachers and pupils who lost their lives serving in the armed forces during the First World War.

Nautical theme for exhibition

THE LATEST exhibition of paintings from the Anderson (Local Colection) Trust — entitled 'Sea Lochs and Rivers' — is now open upstairs at Helensburgh Library in West King Street.

The burgh’s origins and growth have been largely determined by its links with the sea. It is not surprising, therefore, that many of the activities arising from its fortuitous location should be the subject of writing, photography and painting.

Glasgow Boys works on show

AN exhibition in Dunfermline about 'The Glasgow Boys' — many of whom lived and painted in Helensburgh and district — offers from Saturday February 3 a rare opportunity to see many of the works of Scotland’s most celebrated group of artists brought together in one venue.

All of the paintings come from the art collection cared for by Fife Cultural Trust on behalf of Fife Council, which includes forty Glasgow Boys work and features works by leading members of the group and many others associated with it — including John Lavery, E.A.Hornel, George Henry, W.Y.Macgregor, D.Y.Cameron, E.A.Walton, Arthur Melville, James Guthrie, and Joseph Crawhall.

Long history of blaze hotel

THE HUGE fire at the luxury 136-bedroom Cameron House Hotel on Loch Lomondside the week before Christmas was a tragedy with two lives lost and others injured.

Many had their festive season plans ruined, many local people who work at the complex now have worries about the future following the indefinite closure of the hotel, and Leisure Centre members have had their memberships suspended.

First 2019 Open Meeting

LocalHistory-wAt the first Open Meeting of 2019 at Helensburgh Civic Centre on Wednesday January 30 at 7.30pm Trust directors will tell the stories relating to several local images from bygone years.
