Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

But the World War Two hero was best known as a submarine ace and a serial escaper after being captured by the Germans in the Mediterranean in 1943.

New Year Swim 19662741 viewsBy tradition, girls were the first to enter the water at Helensburgh pier. The first man in was Helensburgh Swimming Club president Angus Trail, his 38th Ne'erday plunge. This was the first year that certificates were presented to the participants. Designed by local artist Gregor Ian Smith, they bore the proud inscription 'Many are cauld but few are frozen'.

Master Joe Petersen986 viewsMaster Joe Petersen, billed as 'The Phenomenal Boy Singer', was in fact Mary O'Rourke, born at 6 Maitland Street, Helensburgh, on July 26 1913, the 12th of 14 children of Hannah O’Rourke and her Irish mason’s labourer husband Joseph, who were married in the town on September 16 1892. As Joe, she rose to become a British and continental recording star from 1933 to 42, and in her later years remained a stage favourite in Scotland until she died of bronchitis in Glasgow on Christmas Eve 1964 at the age of 51. Queen's Hotel sun lounge958 viewsThe Queen's Hotel was originally Baths House, built by Henry Bell, who built Europe's first commercial steamship the Comet in 1812. It was always a very popular hotel, and the building has had many alterations but still stands on East Clyde Street, having been converted into flats. It opened on February 15 1929 on the site previously occupied by grocer R.M.Clyde, six years after Robert’s daughter Jean married George Arthur McInnes on January 3 1923. George died in 1937, but Jean carried on until her death in 1941. Her daughter Isobel — better known as Belle and wife of Waldies garage boss and town councillor George Aitkenhead — ran the business for many years with the aid of manager Duncan Ralph.

Provost's Lamps1175 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
