Anderson Trust

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Farm ladies party869 viewsA FORMER Helensburgh woman now living in Shetland, Cathy Shearer, is trying to find out more about this photo of a group of women, including her granny, Barbara McAdam (back row 5th from left), who died in 1954 aged 67. The photo was taken between 1940-1954 by Alexandria photographers Leddy and Glen, probably in the Helensburgh area. At the time Barbara lived at either Callendoune Farm, Helensburgh, or Crossburn Cottage half a mile from the Cross Keys towards Luss. An open-air church service was held annually on the front lawn on Glasgow Fair Sunday. Baird's electric light plant752 viewsAs a schoolboy John Logie Baird installed an electric light plant in the family home, the Manse, in West Argyle Street, Helensburgh. He is seen here with part of the plant. A home-made dynamo was driven by a water-wheel connected to the water main, and with a collection of jam jars and sheet lead successfully generated current.

Shandon Bus Crash1353 viewsA Garelochhead Coach Service double decker bus lies on the beach at Shandon after an accident on the old lochside road in November 1965. Andrew Shirley from Rhu, who is researching the Garelochhead bus companies, believes this bus is MXX 177, one of the former London Transport RT class operated by the firm. It was repaired and put back into service.

RAF squadron visit943 viewsA previously unpublished picture from a fighter pilot's scrapbook of members of the RAF's 610 Squadron on summer visit to Helensburgh from their base in Cheshire in 1938. They have donned tartan berets, much to the amusement of local children. The following year war broke out and two years later these men were fighting in the Battle of Britain and Helensburgh had its own RAF station. Image supplied by Robin Bird.

Provost's Lamps1175 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
