Anderson Trust

AT_Unknown_artist_Helensburgh_Pier~0.jpg

THE Anderson Trust was established in 1980 on the death of Miss A.T.Anderson MBE to manage her bequest to the town of her private collection of paintings. Annie Templeton Anderson (1889-1980), known to all as Nance, was born and lived all her life in Helensburgh where her father had been Provost. The original collection comprised 34 paintings, all of which are associated with the area, either by artist or subject matter. Thanks to generous gifts of works from private donors, and some new purchases, the collection is continues to grow. In 1998 the Anderson Collection was given a permanent home in the new Helensburgh Library, in West King Street, and, with the co-operation of Argyll & Bute Library and Museum Services, the Trust is able to display a selection of paintings from the Collection, for six months every year, in the Upper Gallery of the Library.

Deborah-Kerr,-Melanie-w.jpg
Baby Melanie720 viewsA press picture of Helensburgh film star Deborah Kerr — Mrs Anthony Bartley — is pictured with her baby daughter Melanie, born on December 27 1947. The caption stated: "Young Miss Melanie has the same red hair and blue eyes as her mother, and even at this early age shows signs of also some day having the same vivacious personality."
Baird_postcard33.jpg
Baird by Conroy726 viewsHelensburgh artist Stephen Conroy painted this portrait of TV inventor John Logie Baird. He was specially commissioned by the Scottish Post Office Board to paint six portraits for a postcard series to celebrate the contribution Scots have made to communication, in the year of 1989 when the first Edinburgh Festival of Science and Technology took 'communication' as its theme.
St-Bride_s-w.jpg
St Bride's Church692 viewsThe development of this church started in 1867, but the building shown dates from 1878 and it stood at the corner of John Street and West King Street. For 42 years its minister was the Rev John Baird, father of television inventor John Logie Baird. In 1929 its name was changed from West Parish Church to St Bride's Church. It closed for worship in 1981 and was demolished nine years later. Flats now occupy the corner of the site and Helensburgh Library occupies the rest; three stained-glass windows from the church are on display in the Library. Photo by Professor John Hume.

Standing are club president and prominent local artist Gregor Ian Smith, Scottish Arts Council assistant director William Buchanan who opened the show, and exhibition convener J.W.Norman. In front are Mrs Buchanan and club secretary Mrs Janet Stirling.
Cairndhu,-Ferniegair~0.jpg
Cairndhu and Ferniegair2350 viewsTwo of Helensburgh's biggest mansions, Cairndhu and, on the right, Fergiegair — home of the Kidston family and demolished in the 1960s. Cairndhu was built in 1871 by architect William Leiper for John Ure, then Provost of Glasgow, and Ferniegair was built in 1869 by architect John Honeyman. Behind is Ardencaple Quadrant, built originally to house those who had been injured in the First World War. Image supplied by Alistair Quinlan, circa 1945.
Hermit_s-Well138.jpg
The Hermit's Well963 viewsGardeners are at work and a family are having a picnic in this picture of the Hermit's Well in Hermitage Park. Image circa 1920, nine years after the park was created after the Town Council purchased the grounds from the Cramb family for £3,750. Legend has it that a hermit once lived in the park, and the Hermit's Well, with its copper ladle, granted a wish to those who drank from it. It is there to this day, but is not maintained in a good condition.

Provosts_Lamps~2.jpg
Provost's Lamps1148 views It was a tradition that provosts of Helensburgh had a special lamp post erected outside their house during their term of office. This photograph shows the two lamp posts which stood outside Billy Petrie's house at Segton, John Street at the time of his death in 2022. The coats of arms on the glass are for Dunbartonshire County Council, Dumbarton District Council, Argyll and Bute Council, and Strathclyde Regional Council. He had been provost of the first three of these councils, but not of the last - quite probably a unique state of affairs. Nov 14, 2022
