Holy Loch memories wanted

BBC FACTUAL is currently producing a one-hour history programme for BBC 2 with the working title of ‘Britain’s Nuclear Weapons’ — and they are asking Helensburgh and district people for memories.

The focus is the critical years from 1957-62, in which the film tells the story of the forces that dictated Britain’s nuclear weapons policy and tries to uncover the true cost of maintaining the ‘special relationship’ with America.

Assistant producer Jackie Maclean said: "A key feature of the programme will be the decision to place US Polaris missiles in Holy Loch. We therefore would like to compliment this story with memories of people from the local areas who remember the arrival of the American submarines, who can talk about the impact it had on the surrounding communities.

"We would very much like to hear from anyone local who has memories from that time — whether it is an ex-naval officer, submariner, local business owner, taxi driver, or a local resident who may have observed what was happening."

They hope to film the week commencing April 11.
